@ FASHION ART TORONTO
Tala Nehlawi’s “Damas” collection is a juxtaposition of traditional and modernism. Her inspiration comes from her hometown Damascus, Syria. Laser cut and etched leather have been incorporated throughout the collection to mimic geometrical patterns found on antique copper plates in Damascus. The colour palette consists of crackled copper textures, golden shades, hues of blush and pearl whites. Leather is used to build volume and shape and to create exaggerated sleeves and dome shaped necklines giving a futuristic vibe.
Tala uses fashion as a form of communication to tell stories to the world. She dedicated her début collection to Syria, to show the world that in spite of all the destruction this country has experienced, it is still utterly beautiful.
